Thomas McClellan, 25, admitted he knocked Luna Michelle Younger to the ground, sat on her, and then stabbed in the chest after she would not leave his room after asking for food.
McClellan is accused of wrapping the girl’s body in blankets, drenching it in vodka, before setting it on fire in the bath.
The disturbing scene was revealed by Detective Chuck Buckland at the preliminary hearing at the 55th District Court in Ingham, Michigan, US.
“I felt that would show the mother that we were attempting some effort”
McClellan is charged with murder, child abuse, and arson over the gruesome death of his stepdaughter at the family home.
He faces life in prison if convicted the crime.
Medical experts told the hearing the little girl died from five stabs wounds to the chest.
The girl’s mother Victoria McClellan was at work, and revealed she and her husband had been “bickering” during the day.
She convinced her husband to turn himself into the police, the court heard.
Firefighters who attended the scene revealed the awful discovery.
First responder Corey Drolett testified he thought the girl was hiding until he found her body under the smouldering sheets.
He told another firefighter to attempt CPR, even though they knew she was already dead.
Drolett told the court: “Based on the situation I felt that would show the mother that we were attempting some effort.”
The trial is set for the New Year.
