SMART: Donald Trump has praised Vladimir Putin in a tweet

In a dramatic move the billionaire backed his pal Putin’s decision to wait and “re-build Russian-American relations” next year when Trump takes office.

The pair had previously expressed interest in repairing the frayed relations between their countries – but Trump’s latest comments reveal his possible intentions after he is inaugurated on January 20.

The president-elect tweeted: “Great move on delay (by V Putin) – I always knew he was very smart.”

Trump’s comments come after the Russian president announced he would not “stoop” and expel any US diplomats following the announcement Russian officials would be deported from America.

Putin said: “Reserving our right to respond, we will not stoop to a ‘kitchen’ level of irresponsible diplomacy.

“We will take further steps to rebuild Russian-American relations based on the policy carried out by the administration of President Donald Trump.”

Earlier a US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed 35 Russian diplomats had been given 72 hours to leave America.

Obama has ordered sanctions against Russia and Kremlin intelligence services following claims Putin hacked the US election to sway the result in favour of his pal Donald Trump.

Obama said: ”These actions are not the sum total of our response to Russia’s aggressive activities.

“We will continue to take a variety of actions at a time and place of our choosing, some of which will not be publicised.”

The news comes after Trump slammed claims Putin helped him become president through Russian hacking.
