Happy New Year: Britain welcomes 2017 with spectacular fireworks across the UK


As Big Ben struck midnight the London Eye was lit up with a brilliant display colours.

More than 110,000 people packed the banks of the Thames to see the iconic display.

Around 12,000 fireworks erupted into the sky transforming the city’s skyline into a sea of bright pink, purple, blue, yellow and green at the sold event.

Tributes were also paid to George Michael and other celebrities lost in 2016.

Huge crowds also celebrated displays in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and other cities around the UK.

As the nation’s capital counted down, London mayor, Sadiq Khan, amid tighten security, said the mood on the streets was “upbeat”, adding it was “really important we don’t allow terrorists to disrupt our celebrations on this New Year’s Eve”.
