TOXIC: Electronic cigarette flavours can damage sperm

Boffins have revealed the shocking truth that certain flavours of gaping liquids are actually killing off men’s sperm one by one.

Cinnamon flavouring was shown to make sperm slower at swimming.

They also found that bubblegum e-liquid can poison the testes and damage sperm.

RISKY: Flavourings used in e-cigarettes can cause sperm to move more slowly

Dr Helen O’Neill, fertility researcher and chief author of the new research paper, said that the energy of a sperm as well as how many a man produces are harmed by the toxic chemicals inhaled while vaping.

She said that vaping is “less harmful than conventional cigarettes” but e-cigarettes “are not without their harmful effects”.

While these types of chemical flavours are tested for safety in sweets and other food, it now looks like the heating effect in the electronic cigarette makes the chemicals toxic.

The shock announcement by University College London researchers was made at the British Fertility Conference in Edinburgh on Thursday before the full report is released later this month.

Safety concerns have been raised over the battery-powered smoking devices, which can also damage lungs even though they produce no ash or smoke.

SMELLY: Vape liquid with menthol or tobacco flavours are more toxic to lungs than fruit tastes

Tobacco, vanilla, blueberry, cherry, strawberry and ice-mint have all been found to harm lungs, according to a separate report this year.

Fruit flavours do less damage to lungs compared to highly toxic tastes including menthol, bubblegum, coffee, butterscotch and tobacco.

All of these can be bought easily online or in supermarkets.

Experts from the University of Salford, who published their report in Science Progress magazine, are now calling for better safety checks.

Public Health England research has shown that overall, vaping is far healthier than puffing normal cigarettes.
