After Meryl Streep artfully denounced Donald Trump before all of Hollywood at the Golden Globes last night, the President-elect wanted to make it very clear that there will be no shortage of “stars” at his inauguration. His odd evidence? The supposedly sold-out “dress stores” in Washington D.C.
While responding to Streep’s speech, Trump told the New York Times, “We are going to have an unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout for the inauguration, and there will be plenty of movie and entertainment stars. All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.” Cool. Except–D.C. “dress stores” are not sold-out at all. Even more interestingly, after calling local stores it seems they aren’t getting much of a turnout, either.
The local Bloomingdale’s tells ELLE.com that yes, they do have black-tie dresses but there’s “not a lot of traffic” when it comes to inauguration shoppers. “It’s not what was expected, but [we have] a few [people shopping for the inauguration]. We were expecting heavy traffic and it has not been that way. The last inauguration was a lot more people shopping.” Ooof.
“We haven’t seen anything yet. Usually, it is really big for us but this year we haven’t seen anything yet, surprisingly,” another store rep from Intermix told us after confirming they, indeed, have dresses. Among others we called, White House Black Market and Cusp in Georgetown confirmed they have options in stock. So does Neiman Marcus. And Gucci. And Lord & Taylor. And Nordstrom. All the dresses, you guys!
Of course, you could also go the non-committal route (do you reaaallly want to have the “Trump Inauguration Dress” hanging in your closet forever?) and hit up Rent the Runway which, shocker, ALSO has dresses “in stock all [inauguration] weekend.” Right now, 586 (!) gowns, to be exact.
