The Bachelor franchise has seen its share of heartbreaking contestant backstories, and Nick Viall’s Season 21 continues that trend.
Bachelor 2017 had us reaching for the tissues on tonight’s Episode 2, when neonatal nurse Danielle Maltby opened up about her past during the first 1-on-1 date of the season.
The Wisconsin native, who currently lives in Nashville, suffered a tragic loss five years ago when her fiancé, Nick Haag, passed away at age 29.
As she explained during the date, Nick suffered a drug overdose just a few months after the proposal — which was surely a painful loss for both his family and his then 25-year-old bride-to-be.

Apparently, the guitarist and his band Barkeep had plans to relocate back to Nashville — he and Danielle were living in her native Waukesha, Wisconsin — at the time.
“He overdosed on drugs and I found him,” she told the Bachelor during their date. “I didn’t know he was an addict and it was a complete shock.”
“It’s a very traumatic thing,” she continued. “I think it’s made me afraid to tell people who I’ve been in relationships with since then … they’ve always come to an end shortly after I let them know that part of me.”
Following his death, the Viterbo University grad made some big life changes, like moving to Nashville on her own and pursuing a part-time modeling career.
Danielle also seems to have struck up a friendship with a bunch of musicians in her new hometown.
Still, the 31-year-old has found a way to always remember her lost love.
Not long after his passing, she had the word “strength” tattooed on her left ring finger.
