Michelle Obama sat down with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday’s Tonight Show, where she opened up about how her family’s departure from the White House has hit them all harder than they thought it would.
“It has been surprisingly emotional for all of us in ways we didn’t expect,” the first lady revealed, after the pair had reminisced about the many sketches her family has filmed with the talk show host, and how many initiatives Jimmy has helped Michelle promote over the last eight years.
The two also discussed the President’s touching farewell address on Tuesday, where many in the audience, including the couple’s eldest daughter, Malia, were brought to tears, while FLOTUS managed to remain composed and tear-free.
“You kept it together, but I lost it,” Jimmy admitted. “I was crying on my wife’s shoulder. I was like, ‘He’s just the best man in the whole wide world.'”

While Michelle and Malia watch the speech from the audience, the couple’s youngest daughter, Sasha was nowhere to be seen.
“She had a final,” Michelle revealed with a shrug. “You know the Obamas, girl. Sorry. You take your test. You can say goodbye later.”
The sweet, friendly interview made up the majority of Tuesday’s show, as Jimmy did his best to keep from getting emotional during their candid chat.

However, they made sure to keep things light with a fun segment of “Thank You Notes,” and Michelle’s first note, which was to her husband, ended up being the sweetest note you could have hoped for.
“Thank you Barack,” Michelle said aloud as she scribbled her note and soft, gentle “Thank You Note music” played in the background. “For proving you’re not a lame duck, but my very own silver fox.”
Before Michelle came out for their sit-down, Jimmy played a video he recorded with the First Lady that was one of the most touching and emotional prank videos ever made.
Unsuspecting people were asked to tape goodbye messages for the beloved First Lady, unaware that she was actually standing behind a curtain listening to their kind words.
When she came out to surprise them, their reactions were all the same: total shock and instant tears of joy.
