“The US is not even a European country”
The White House has signed off on the biggest military deployment since the Cold War with only seven days until Donald Trump takes his place in the Oval Office.
Nearly 1,000 United States soldiers have arrived in Poland this week, the Polish Defence Ministry revealed.
In total, the incoming US tank brigade – part of a NATO agreement signed in 2014 – consists of 4,000 service personnel, 87 tanks and 18 self-propelled Paladin howitzers.
Last month outgoing President Barack Obama vowed to get revenge on Russia and Putin after Moscow’s hacking attempts on the US election.
Obama added the US would strike at “a time and place of our choosing”.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the US decision “threatened Russia’s interests and our security”.
He added: “It’s a third country that is building up its military presence on our borders in Europe.
“It isn’t even a European country.”
Military expert Vladimir Kozin believes the decision to send troops to Poland is part of an effort by the US to “maintain tensions around the world”.
“They want to turn the region into another tinderbox ready to ignite,” Kozin told Sputnik.
“This is their number one priority.”
