Resurgent Russia continues to flex its military muscles under Vladimir Putin.
But amid Russian expansion, experts now fear that British forces are dangerously exposed.
An army think-tank claims that years of budget cuts mean Britain’s ability to remain an effective fighting force has been “effectively removed”.
“The prospect of ‘losing the division in an afternoon’ will weigh heavily on the chain of command”

Experts also believe that the army’s whole division “could be lost in an afternoon”.
And the report also warns that Britain could easily be dragged into battle by its allies – a threat made more credible after the inauguration of President Trump last week.
The shocking study was put together by the Centre for Historical Analysis and Conflict Research (CHACR) – based at the royal academy in Sandhurst.
It reads: “If one merely sees preparedness through net manpower and kinetic force capacity, the British Army is at its smallest and has faced years of budget cuts.
“The prospect of ‘losing the division in an afternoon’ will weigh heavily on the chain of command, with strategic-to-tactical command compression almost inevitable as politicians appreciate the stakes involved in committing the division to battle.”
But the Ministry of Defence hit back.
A spokesman told The Sunday Times: “The army is ready and capable of deploying a potent, large scale, war-fighting force at divisional level with sufficient notice.”
