NICK Kyrgios’ management has vehemently rejected reports he could be tempted to pursue a basketball career with the Sydney Kings after the club invited the Australian tennis star to “connect with the NBL franchise.”
Kyrgios, who is in Melbourne to lead Australia’s Davis Cup charge against the Czech Republic at Kooyong, has not had any direct contact with the Kings and is believed to be the victim of a publicity stunt.
SURPRISE: Nick’s shock Davis Cup opponent
The Herald Sun understands Kyrgios’ management was inadvertently alerted to emails outlining ways in which the club would leak the “story” to the media despite being told that Kyrgios had no plans to pursue the offer to train with the club.
Kyrgios’s team has also asked for the “club to respect Nick and not reach out to media about the matter and the club and its publicity team went along with the stunt anyway.”
Kyrgios’ management described the use of the world No 15 player’s name and stature as “opportunistic” and “exploitative.”
“The club’s publicity team was clearly on a path to use Kyrgios’s celebrity to promote itself, its coach and GM”, Kyrgios’ management team said.
Kyrgios is a keen basketball follower and has played the sport to a decent level.
But he has repeatedly pledged his allegiance to tennis.
