WITH or without Bernard Tomic, Lleyton Hewitt believes Australia has the depth and quality to make a strong push for its first Davis Cup since 2003.

Regardless of whether Tomic ends a self-imposed Cup exile before Australia hosts the US in an April 7-9 quarter-final, Hewitt is massing impressive options.

“Depth is a massive key in this competition, singles and doubles,” Hewitt said, foreshadowing the possible future availability of Thanasi Kokkinakis, John Millman and James Duckworth.

“Thanasi is a bit of an X factor. We all know the quality of tennis he can play.

Armed with brooms and towels, organisers, linesmen, and ball-kids tried and failed to contain the iguana.

It wasn’t quite like the thrilling, Sir David Attenborough-narrated Iguana vs. Snake epic that went viral around the interwebs last year, however it was no less entertaining watching a professional tennis match descend into chaos over an innocent Miami iguana crawling, leaping and running across the court of a Masters 1000 event.

Eventually the iguana was nabbed by an official and removed from the court to rousing applause.

Vesely went on to defeat Haas 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5. The iguana gone, but not forgotten.

ASH Barty has stretched a stunning singles revival to eight successive wins after upstaging Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard in the Miami Open’s first round.

Barty will climb to a projected career-high ranking of No 84 after stunning former world No 5 Bouchard 6-4 5-7 6-3 to earn a second-round tilt at fellow Queenslander Sam Stosur.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Barty’s victory adds to a streak of seven wins — all posted at the Malaysian Open, where she claiming two qualifying victories before snaring five main-draw scalps.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

A wildcard entrant in Miami, Barty preyed on Bouchard’s dodgy serve — breaking six times for the match — and was rewarded for returning pressure when Bouchard double-faulted twice in the last game.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

A Wimbledon junior champion, Barty famously walked away from tennis to play cricket in 2014.

But her return to her first sporting love has now scaled new heights with guaranteed main draw participation at the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

The Queenslander’s doubles has been thriving, too, with victory in Kuala Lumpur with Casey Dellacqua.

Ajla Tomljanovic’s match with CiCi Bellis was cancelled when the American succumbed to suspected gastroenteritis and withdrew from the tournament.

Bellis was replaced by Magda Linette and the match was rescheduled.

Miami officials would not comment on reports of widespread food poisoning similar to that which forced Nick Kyrgios out of an Indian Wells quarter-final clash with Roger Federer.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic, Stosur and Daria Gavrilova all will be in action over the next two days.

Jordan Thompson lost 1-6 6-4 6-3 to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.
